Obituary for Sherrill Jane Shouldice

Sherrill Jane (Poff) Shouldice passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at Quinte Healthcare North Hastings on Friday, December 8th, 2023 following a very difficult illness at the age of 77. Sherrill Shouldice, beloved wife & best friend of Layton for 58 years, loving mother of Steve and Grant, loving grandmother of Ryan, Taylor, Alexa and Scott, lovingly remembered by her daughters-in-law Carrie and Ana and by her siblings Clem (& Bev) Poff of British Columbia, Tom Poff of Bancroft, Verrill (& Richard) Eddy of Bancroft, Karrill (& Gerald) Kellar of Bancroft and Kevin (& Linda) Poff of Peterborough. Sherrill was predeceased by her beloved son Eric, by her siblings, Ted, Rhonda, Peggy and Carmen and by her parents, Bill & Hazel (Ray) Poff.
Sherrill was raised along with her nine siblings at the family home on Chemaushgon Street. She was a graduate of N.H.H.S. Her post high school education included a chartered insurance professional program earning her the right to have CIP after her name. Sherrill was always adding to her Insurance Brokerage qualifications on a regular basis. She worked at Bronson Insurance for several years before joining the O'Shaughnessy Insurance firm where she was Office Manager. Following their move to the Owen Sound area, she was an Insurance Broker at Carruthers - Nickol Insurance until her retirement in 2001.
Sherrill's community service in Bancroft included 9 years on the Bancroft Council with her last three years as Deputy Reeve. These saw her represent council on the Library board and the Parks & Recreation Committee in particular. It is interesting to note that Sherrll always said that if she was lucky enough to win big on a lottery, she would donate all of it to the Town of Bancroft to upgrade Hastings Street South all the way to Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.
Sherrill loved Bancroft, her hometown, where she and Layton returned to in June of 2021 after purchasing a home on Golfview Drive. With the help of Sherrill's family, a lot of hard work went into putting their stamp on their new residence. It came as a devastating shock when Sherrill was diagnosed with inoperable cancer in the summer of 2022.
Sherrill leaves a huge void in the family and will be lovingly remembered forever by Layton, their boys, their families and by the Poff family. Eric will be no longer be by himself. As per Sherrill's wishes, Tim Baragar will preside at a quiet remembrance ceremony at her gravesite in the spring.
Sherrill's stoic, always pleasant and kind demeanor and her love for her family and her home will live on in the hearts of all who have been privileged to have known her. May she now rest in peace.

"We'll Understand"

Sometime we'll understand
Not here but in the coming years
It may be in the better land
We'll read the meaning of our tears
And there sometime we'll understand
We'll catch the broken threads again
And finish what we here began
Heaven will the mysteries explain
And then, ah then, we'll understand
Why what we long for most of all
Eludes so oft our eager hand
Why hopes are crushed and castles fall
Up there, sometime we'll understand
God knows the way, he holds the key
He guides us with unerring hand
Sometime with tearless eyes we'll see
Yes there, up there, we'll understand
Then trust in God through all the days
Fear not for He doth hold thy hand
Though dark the way still sing and praise
Sometime, sometime we'll understand
All good things come to an end.
