Obituary for Nathan John Libby

The Lord has taken our precious Nathan home – into the Father’s house.

He was a son to Jackie and I … a husband to Lindsay … a father to Jack and the little one on the way … … a brother to Kyla, Kristin and Matthew … a brother-in-law to Jon, Connor and Macaila … an uncle to Levi, Rylie, Brynlee, Milly and Brooks … a grandson … a nephew … a cousin … a good friend to many … we all are shattered by his death.

Nathan was born on March 22, 1995 in Peterborough, Ontario. We held him, cared for him, prayed for him, loved him and watched him grow into a fine young man. Nathan loved the outdoors from childhood. He always wanted to help daddy with work. He was quiet. Those characteristics followed him through his life.

We lived in Woodview, north of Peterborough, on a rural property until Nathan was 5 years old. He attended Grace Christian Academy for JK and part of SK. We moved to Bancroft in 2000 and Nathan attended Bancroft Public School for the remainder of SK through to grade 6, NHSES for grade 7/8 and North Hastings High School through grade 12. His favourite school years were the NOS and NERDS years of high school; both excellent outdoor education programs. Most of those years he spent his summers with us at Graphite Bible Camp. Rather than hanging out with the campers he wanted to work with the men, so he worked on maintenance with uncle Boyd and many others.

Nathan was intelligent, a good reader, an incredible writer, but his desire was to work with his hands. He began a carpentry apprenticeship during high school summers and received his Red Seal in Carpentry in 2015. Most of his working years were spent in the Bancroft community. He was a hardworking man who wasn’t satisfied unless the job was done right.

The outdoors became a passion for Nathan. He loved hunting, fishing, canoeing and camping – in that order. He was a country boy through and through who hated ever travelling to any city where it was just house after house.

He was quiet to most people - keeping things locked up inside. But he could unwind and open up with people and in circumstances where he felt comfortable.

In July of 2019, Nathan married Lindsay Cybulskie in a very small, private wedding – just Nathan’s style. He never liked attention or being in the spotlight in formal situations. Nathan and Lindsay moved to their little house on Musclow Greenview Road shortly after their wedding. Jackson Ross was born on August 30, 2021. Lindsay is due with their second child in October. He loved Lindsay and Jack.

We cannot understand why the Lord took Nathan so suddenly and tragically on a lonely night while he was doing something that he loved to do, fishing – night fishing for ling to be specific. We struggle with the what ifs of the circumstance, the terror of the final moments of his life struggling in that cold water. He was alone. All of us who loved him are shaken by that thought. But he really wasn’t alone. The Saviour – Jesus – who he trusted at an early age, who he grew to know and quietly followed was with him. Why didn’t he spare him? We will not know the answer to that question until we see him again in heaven.

We are devastated by his loss. Our lives will never be the same. But we who knew Nathan and loved him will never forget him. The most difficult days lie ahead for us. The hurt will never completely go away until we are HOME together in the Father’s house.

We love you Nathan, Nato, Nate, Natey … until we see you again!

"Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many dwellings; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know."

Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?"

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
