Obituary

The vibrant artist, walker of the woods and nourisher of the wild flowers, Aija Grantins, passed away on September 27, 2020 at the age of 81. She leaves behind her talent and wisdom to her daughter, Sam (& Jackie) of Ottawa and her daughter, Sylvia of Virginiatown. Aija was born on Saturday, October 22, 1938 in Litene, Latvia. She and her parents, Ella and Julius Brunins, along with her brother Uldis and her sisters, Valda and Vija, emigrated to Canada in 1949. Aija met Imants Grantins, the Cabinetmaker, at a Latvian party in Toronto. They married in 1962 and had two daughters. They moved the family to Lake St. Peter in 1973 and spent four and a half decades making and selling art together. Imants passed away in July of 2019. Along with Sam and Sylvia, Aija is survived by her little sister, Vija, by her nieces, Debra, Susan and Lija and by her nephew, Stephen.
As per Aija's wishes, there will be no formal service. She didn't even like that at the dinner table. She did, however, like "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes. That was her favourite. It is playing now for her, as loud as can be.

To Sylvia and Sam and extended family, our most sincere condolences for your loss. It’s now time to relax and dwell in the great memories you all have of Aija. Is there not a poem that states ‘don’t cry for me— I am happy, I am safe and I suffer no more. Don’t cry for me! Dave and Betty Oehring.
